How this estimate is modeled
This tool uses a simple, transparent model that runs entirely in your browser on the numbers you enter. Nothing is looked up or sent to a server. It works in four steps:
Expected performance
The model estimates an expected share of games based on the rating difference between you and your opponent.
Match performance level
It then asks what rating level would make the actual score approximately expected against the opponent you entered.
Rating impact
It combines your entered rating with the estimated match-performance level using a simple rolling-average assumption.
Rating reliability
The reliability setting you choose determines how much prior information the model assumes is already behind your entered rating, and therefore how much a single match can move the estimate:
- New / uncertain — the model treats the current rating as if it has relatively little prior evidence behind it (internal prior weight 2).
- Established — the model treats the current rating as if it has a meaningful body of prior evidence behind it (internal prior weight 4).
These weights are deliberately simple and transparent. They are not estimates of the number of matches USTA uses and do not reproduce USTA's proprietary Dynamic NTRP calculation.
None of these formulas are USTA's proprietary Dynamic NTRP algorithm. Tennis Rating Lab is an independent model designed to make match performance and rating direction easier to understand.

How the dynamic rating estimate works
The estimator compares the level implied by each score with the ratings you enter for you and your opponent, then combines the recent performances into a modeled direction. It uses only the match information you provide; it does not look up a private rating.
Why several matches are more useful than one
One result can be unusually strong or weak. Several matches reveal whether the same performance level is repeating across different opponents and scores, producing a more useful trend than a single-match snapshot.
Why the official value cannot be reproduced exactly
USTA does not publish each player's underlying Dynamic NTRP or every detail needed to recreate it. The result here is therefore an independent model for orientation, not an official USTA calculation or a promise about a year-end rating.
